MATCH REPORT: Chatham Cup Round 1 vs Te Atatu FC

18 May

Chatham Cup Round 1 Match Report – East Coast Bays vs Te Atatu FC, Chatham Cup Round 1, Bay City Park, Saturday 14th May 2022.

Debut game & Goal for Nick Gaze the highlight as Bays cruise to Chatham Cup win against depleted Te Atatu.

League action was put on hold as Bays took on Te Atatu in the Chatham Cup. One change from last weeks starting lineup saw Daewook come into the side in place of Zane. Te Atatu were missing a number of players because of Covid. Before we had even sat down for action Bays were ahead in the first minute when Liam moved down the right, skipped over a challenge and crossed to the centre where Keegan headed home. 1-0 to Bays right at the start. Four minutes later a long ball by James down the left found Codey & his cross was missed in the middle by Judd. Callaghan then fouled Codey and the free kick was clipped in by Mikey k, but straight to the keeper. A cross from Callum was headed on by Liam and Keegan shot past the left post. Judd then jinked around a few defenders before being crowded out of a shot. Codey’s next cross to the back post found Liam & his cross was cleared. Daewook then had a shot from long range that went well over the goal.

Bays were relentless on attack. Codey & Keegan both had shots blocked. Codey then had another cross cleared for a corner. The corner was cleared and a shot by Callum outside the box was also blocked. Bailey then sped down the left and his pass found Liam. Liam cut inside the defenders and his left foot shot went well wide. Bailey then lost possession with a stray Crossfield ball which Te Atatu played long ball. Louie was alert to the danger and headed the ball over the attacker for James to clear. At the other end, a free kick by Codey was headed over by Judd. A long throw by Mikey found Judd who had another shot blocked. Te Atatu played a long ball right down the middle of defence. Louie was out in a flash and cleared from Gilbert. On his follow through Louie may have caught Gilbert but the referee deemed play on. Gilbert let his frustration get to him and was booked for dissent.

Five minutes before half time Callum had a shot that was blocked by what looked like a hand, but no penalty was given. A great pass by Declan found Callum but when he was preparing to shoot the defence rallied to shepherd him away from goal.  Just before half time Bays had a great chance to extend their lead when a pass to the back post found Callum again but his shot hit the post & rolled kindly to the keeper. Half time it was 1-0 to Bays. Loads of chances created but only the one taken so early in the match.

Five minutes into the second half some neat interplay between Bailey, Liam & Keegan found the later bearing down on the goal before he was crudely fouled by Bowman, who was booked for the foul. The resulting free kick by Callum came of heads & out for a corner. A cross by Keegan to the back post found Codey who headed back across goal for Callum to shoot over. A stray pass out of defence let Te Atatu have a rare shot on the Bays goal, but Batt shot well wide. James then played an excellent ball forward to Judd whose long-range shot was saved. Keegan and Declan then both had shots blocked. In the 58th minute Te Atatu made their first change when McTiernan replaced Gilbert. Three minutes later they made their second change with Hannah replacing Bowman.

Declan went on a run & after cutting inside the defence his cross was blocked out for another corner. And excellent cross from the left from Codey was touched on by Keegan but also went out for a corner. A fast break down the right lead to a cross/shot by Judd and then a header wide by the same player. Liam then broke into the box and his shot was saved. After 75 minutes Te Atatu ventured into the Bays half for the first time in ages and Hannah’s cross sailed over everyone in the middle. Another Codey cross was blocked for a corner from which Daewook just missed connecting to. Bays thought they had scored in the 79th minute when Declan was through on the left & he shot past the keeper. The assistant referee flagged for offside (still hotly debated by Alison !!) and the goal was disallowed.

That was the last action for Declan as he was replaced by Nick Gaze, for his first team debut. Zane replaced Judd and Todd Gibbs came on for his first game for Bays since 2018 replacing Bailey. Three Minutes later a great Crossfield ball by Zane found Callum and his cross found Codey whose right foot shot went over. Callum then played some nice interchanges with Nick which led to another shot by Codey over. With a minute to go in normal time Nick drove forward down the middle and rolled a right foot shot into the far corner for his debut goal and 2-0 to Bays. Liam was replaced by Josh (not Joe) Coe with a minute to go. And in injury time Zane had a shot straight at the keeper and Keegan was clean through only for his shot to be saved.

The final whistle went & Bays were safely through to the next round of the Chatham Cup with the 2-0 result. Many, many chances created but only two to show for right at the beginning & at the end of the game. A comfortable win and fantastic to see another player make such a great debut. Codey was awarded the Bays player of the day for his nonstop running and barrage of crosses from the left all afternoon. Next up a home league game against high flying Ellerslie next Saturday.
