MATCH REPORT: Chatham Cup Round 01 vs Rapa Nui FC
Chatham Cup Round 01 Match Report: East Coast Bays vs Rapa Nui FC, Bay City Park, Saturday 13th May 2023.
Bays Run riot with record score in Chatham Cup 1st Round.
In a break from league action, Bays were at home in the 1st round of the Chatham Cup against Sunday League side Rapa Nui FC. A number of first team players were rested including the whole back line, so a number of first team squad players were chosen to play as well as the welcome return from injury of Daewook Kim & Logan Archer. Promoted from the Under 23’s and on the bench were Mr Sam Coyle, 16-year-old Orlando Thorpe and young Caleb Noel. All were in line to make their first team debuts.
EC Bays started quickly and in the first minute Leo played a long ball forward that was just out of reach of Oscar. At the other end Declan, carelessly lost possession and Williamson shot well over. Two minutes later a long ball from Daewook found Nicolai on the right. He stepped past a defender and squared the ball into the middle for Oscar to tap home. EC Bays 1 Rapa Nui 0. Two minutes later a similar ball down the right flank found Nicolai again. He beat two defenders and in an action replay squared the ball to Oscar for another tap in. EC Bays 2 Rapa Nui 0. Bays then had a free kick for handball. Nicolai’s free kick to the back post found Bailey free but he put his header over the top.
In the 8th minute, a ball found Oscar down the left flank. He cut inside and played the ball square for Josh to hit a first time right footer from distance that went in off the far post. A great hit and Bays were now leading 3-0 in the first ten minutes. Bays at times were a little bit careless in possession. A ball was lost in defence and Perez was clean through. Louie was alert to the danger and saved with his feet. Another poor defensive clearance went straight out to Williamson and he let fly from distance to see the ball sail over Louie and Rapa Nui had scored a shock goal. EC Bays 3 Rapa Nui 1. A trip by Rojas on Mikey G led to a Bays free kick that Nicolai put a bit too much on to go over for a goal kick. Bays extended their lead in the 21st minute when Bailey found Josh down the left flank. He crossed into the middle where Nicolai brought the ball down, beat a defender, and slotted home smartly. EC Bays 4 Rapa Nui 1.
Two minutes later in almost an action replay of the fourth goal the same two players combined as Josh crossed from the left and at the back post, Nicolai slotted home just inside the keepers near post. EC Bays 5 Rapa Nui 1. Some of the Rapa Nui players started to lose their tempers and Levill was booked for a foul on Nick. At the other end, Logan gave a free kick away just outside the box. Curifil tried to curl the ball over the wall but hit the top of the wall and the ball went comfortably to Louie. Nazeem was then booked for a foul on Logan and from the resulting free kick Declan saw his shot go over the wall but also over the crossbar. In the 32nd minute a Nicolai cross to the back post found Bailey’s chin and after a short scramble in the box Bailey set up Josh to slot home his second of the game. EC Bays 6 Rapa Nui 1. Williamson was then shown a yellow card for pulling back Josh. A Nicolai corner to the back post found Logan free but his header went well over the goal. Just before the break Logan played a great one two with Mikey G and strode forward to hammer a right footer into the far corner. EC Bays 7 Rapa Nui 1. Leo then played in Mikey G who passed down the middle for Oscar to run on to and score but the offside flag went up.
Straight after that, the half time whistle went and the half time score read EC Bays 7 Rapa Nui FC 1. Bays had played some good stuff in the first half but were also a little bit guilty of loose play at times. Rapa Nui had given a good account of themselves but the longer the first half went on they started losing their discipline a bit. Rapa Nui were quick to make changes at the start of the second half with Valdes & Pereira replacing Levill & Monreal. Bays were straight on the attack again with Bailey linking up with Oscar & Nick down the left flank before Nick’s left footer just went wide of the post. Bailey set up Oscar twice more but the Rapa Nui keeper saved both of Oscar’s efforts. Rapa Nui had a rare attack when Pereira broke down the middle and his shot went just wide. A ball down the right by Mikey G found Nicolai and his shot was straight at the keeper. The first goal in the second half came in 56th minute when Logan’s long ball found Oscar on the left. He cut in, rounded the keeper and shot home for his hat trick goal. EC Bays 8 Rapa Nui 1. Four minutes later Mr Sam Coyle came on for his debut in place of Daewook, who had taken a knock. Therefore, a slight change in defence so that Sam could slot into midfield. Rapa Nui captain Villegas had been chirping away at the referee all game and talked himself into the referees notebook after a bit of dissent. Mike G played an excellent ball through to Declan. Declan spun his defender but his goal bound shot was saved by the keeper.
Another ball down the right found Nicolai yet again. He broke into the box and his cross blocked for a corner. Nicolai’s corner was only cleared as far as Oscar who squared the ball to Leo. Leo swivelled and hit a great right footer into the bottom corner for his first Bays goal. EC Bays 9 Rapa Nui 1. Mr Coyle set up Declan who set up Josh for a right foot shot that just went wide. Rapa Nui then made a change with J Nunez coming on. In the 71st minute Bays made four changes with Sam Carpenter coming on for Louie, Dylan coming on for Nicolai, Orlando coming on for his debut for Josh and Caleb coming on for his debut in place of Declan. Bailey immediately got Dylan into the action as Dylan crossed into the middle but the keeper cut out the ball with Caleb waiting at the back post. Dylan did play in Caleb in the 73rd minute and from the right edge of the box, Caleb buried a right footer into the far corner for his first Bays senior goal. EC Bays 10 Rapa Nui 1.
Bays were hungry for more goals as Mr Coyle played Oscar in down the left but his shot was saved low down. In a rare mistake, Mr Coyle slipped when in possession and Perez collected the ball before firing high & wide. Perez then made a break down the right and the Bays defence cleared for a rare Rapa Nui corner. Down the other end the Bays corners were entrusted to young Orlando. One of these found Bailey who scuffed his shot and Leo put the loose ball well over the bar. Dylan then had a shot blocked for a corner that was cleared away by the Rapa Nui defence. Another through ball to Dylan saw another cross squared to the back post but just out of reach of Nick. In the 86th minute, a mix up in the Rapa Nui defence saw a clearance driven straight into Caleb and the deflection rolled straight past the bewildered Rapa Nui keeper into the bottom corner. Very unlucky on the defence but good on Caleb for being in the right place. EC Bays 11 Rapa Nui 1.
In order to stop a quick throw in by Oscar one of the Rapa Nui defenders stupidly jumped up and was booked for deliberate handball. There was just enough time for Bays # 1 marksman to get on the scoresheet. In the 90th minute, a cross by Caleb was headed back across goal and Dylan headed home from close range, EC Bays 12 Rapa Nui 1. A minute later a ball down the left flank by Mr Coyle found Oscar and he unselfishly played the ball into the middle for an unmarked Dylan to bury into the far corner. EC Bays 13 Rapa Nui 1. There was still enough time for Bailey to have two more chances from an Orlando corner. Bailey’s initial header was cleared off the line and his follow up shot went well wide. Shortly after that the final whistle went and Bays were safely into Round 2 of the Chatham Cup. Final score EC Bays 13 Rapa Nui FC 1. The game was a very useful run out for a number of the first team squad players and congratulations to Sam, Orlando & Caleb for making their first team debuts. Congratulations also to Leo & Caleb on their debut first team goals and congratulations to Oscar on receiving the Bays player of the day award for his outstanding hat trick.
Next Saturday Bays return to league action with a trip to the Mountain, at Mangere, to face Onehunga Mangere at Mangere Domain. See you all there.
